Getting a regular apartment in Göteborg can take a long time, often several years. The same is true for student apartments. Here are some of the alternatives.
To get a regular apartment you need to register with Boplats. If you are a foreign national just check "No" in the box for "Swedish Social Security number?" and fill in your date of birth. The following four digits will be randomly assigned. Complete the registration and you are able to apply for apartments, but, and this is important, no landlord will accept you as a tenant until you have a Swedish personal number. You can get this from the tax authorities.
When you have a Swedish personal number, please visit us in person and bring some form of identification along with the papers from the Swedish tax authorities and we will change your personal number for you.
You can expect having to wait for a few years before you start getting offers to view apartments as there is quite a shortage of apartments in the city. There are some 140 000 registered applicants in the system and only about 9 000 contracts are signed each year through Boplats.
So, what are the other alternatives?

In the main section at Boplats you find all available apartments. If you want to see student apartments only, please go here. (Press 'English' at top left of the website to change the language.)
Waiting time for these apartments will be somewhat shorter, but count on at least a year, often more. Most of the apartments you see belong to Chalmers Studentbostäder. They offer students a wide range of apartments, from one room and a kitchenette to three rooms and a kitchen close to the center of Gothenburg and the Universities.
Some of the city's larger housing companies, like Bostadsbolaget or Familjebostäder, also have a selection of student offers which they advertise on Boplats. These are regular flats rented out on special conditions to students. Since the rents are low and there is efficient public transportation to the city center, this is a good alternative.
You apply to all these by clicking the red button 'Apply'. You will now be included in a pool of applicants, and the landlord will offer a few of the applicants the opportunity to view the apartment. If you are selected you will get a message on boplats.se and an email to the adress you have registered.
The other major landlord with student flats in Göteborg is SGS Studentbostäder. These are not found at Boplats. You apply by registering in their own queue. At SGS Studentbostäder you can sometimes at the end of the month find "last minute apartments", called Sista minuten. In this case the principle is first come, first served and not their regular queue system. Note that you have to be registered with SGS in order to apply for Sista minuten apartments.

Na-Rhee Sherfling came to Göteborg last summer and is one of hundreds of students who found a room in a private home though Boplats.
| To rent a room in someone's home is a good alternative if you need somewhere to stay immediately at the start of the semester. These rooms are collected as a service to international students.

This service is the result of a collaboration between the student housing companies, the city of Gothenburg, University of Gothenburg and Chalmers who every year call upon the people of Göteborg to give rooms to help the international students. Since the students often are accepted to study- or research programs with short notice, without givning them a chance of registering in time to get an apartment, this has become necessary to be able to accommodate all arriving students, an important goal for the city.
- We get diversity and they enrich the academies adding new dimensions. Some stay here, and others bring a broad network back home, says Eva Henricsson at Göteborgs & Co, the city's public relations department.

On two occasions at the start of the semester we welcome students to come and meet landlords with rooms for hire. Just drop by and find a place to stay.
